Text from UMHS Blog Post:

The construction site for the renovation of the A. Alfred Taubman Health Sciences Library (THSL) will begin to take shape the week of Jan. 13, resulting in closures to one lane of traffic on Catherine Street and changes to a popular pedestrian route.

The library closed Dec. 22 for a $55 million, 18-month renovation project. Beginning Jan. 13, barriers will go up and close one lane of Catherine Street, as well as the sidewalk on the north side of the street between the Victor Vaughan Building and the south entrance to the Medical Science II building. These areas will remain closed for the duration of the project. It will still be possible to enter Med Sci II.

In addition, the pedestrian bridge connecting the Glen Avenue parking structure with the sidewalk in front of the library will close Jan. 13. Faculty, staff, students and visitors will need to cross at street level to the south side of Catherine in order to move east or west.

Access between West Medical Center Drive and the Medical Science Research Building courtyard also will be altered; signs will be posted.

A PDF of construction logistics, including closures and alternative pedestrian routes can be found here.

Bus service in the area also will be affected, as the stop in front of the library will be removed for the duration of the project. The Research Link bus will have a temporary stop installed on West Medical Center Drive at the Victor Vaughan Building. All other bus routes will be serviced by existing stops on Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place. For more information, visit the Parking and Transportation Services website.

While the facility is closed, library materials — including books and bound journals — can be requested viaMLibrary’s online catalog or via web forms. When construction is complete in mid-2015, the library building will be better equipped to handle the educational demands of the 21st Century — as you can see in these schematic designs for the project, approved by regents in March 2013.

Medical School support offices formerly located in the library building have been temporarily relocated; see this message for details.
