Become an Expert in SciVal Experts


Learn to navigate SciVal Experts like a pro this coming Monday, March 25th at the Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building. Presented by the Office of Research, this half-day event is geared for faculty, stafff, research administrators, and analysts. You have the option to stay for the morning session from 8:30-9:30 am only, or the entire session from 8:30 – 12 pm if you are engaged in extensive research network analysis. The workshop agenda is as follows:

8:00 – 8:30 AM: Check-in (bagels and coffee will be provided)

8:30 – 9:30 AM: Research Networks [Audience: Faculty, Staff, Analysts, Research Administrators]

  • What is SciVal Experts?  [With a focus on profile content, end-user use cases for the site, network information and images available on demand in Experts]
  • What is network analysis?  How is network analysis used in support of research?  [Center grant team building, proposal exhibit preparation, network diagrams, identifying collaboration opportunities, identifying key people or simply ‘who is doing what’ on campus]
  • Q&A

9:30 – 9:45 AM: Break

9:45 AM – 12:00 PM: Workshop [Audience: Analysts]

  • Deeper dive into network analysis data structures, metrics, and tools [plus a preview of data transformations and introduction to NodeXL]
  • Downloading data from SciVal Experts
  • Creating networks [common network data transformations]
  • Visualizing networks [configuring visual display in NodeXL, fine tuning and best practices for style and delivery]
  • Q&A
Anyone is welcome to attend the first part of the workshop on research networks.  The second part of the workshop is tailored towards individuals in a data or business analyst role.  This would be someone who is comfortable with advanced Excel formulas.  It is important that analysts attend the entire workshop.
