Swine Flu Mutations

The CDC has issued a statement that a variant of the H1N2 virus has been confirmed in Minnesota.

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences charts how mutations can transform a virus and make it more likely to potentially cause a pandemic. If you’d rather read a lay description overthe study itself, head over to the phenomenal NPR Health blog, Shotswhich covered the story.

This isn’t entirely related, but it did jog my memory that U of M employees can get free flu shots at specified times this fall (one is today! Next one on September 27) and the University of Michigan Health System has additional options for students and the general community.

Many thanks to our vigilant Emerging Technologies librarian, who suggested this post.
