Another disease (this time in animals) is erradicated

From the New York Times comes a story about rinderpest, only the second disease known to have been completely eliminated.   Rinderpest, which is related to measles, kills cattle and other cloven-hoofed animals, such as deer, pigs, and giraffes.  “Big animal” veterinarians working for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization are the heroes of this story:  they fought the disease “in remote and sometimes war-torn areas — across arid stretches of Africa bigger than Europe, in the Arabian desert and on the Mongolian steppes.”
